1.0 Your Story
*Be sure to review the âBefore you Startâ section with your group before beginning this session. It is important that everyone understand the basics of how this group works.
Summary: Encourage your group to openly share where they are in life and in their spiritual journeys with God. At this point, there are no right or wrong answers. There are no good stories or bad stories. And there is no room for judgment and criticism. People should be accepted and welcomed into the group from wherever they are in life.
As a leader, you must model the kind of openness and acceptance that this group needs. When you share your story, make sure you do not appear to be the perfect saint. Be honest, raw, and even vulnerable so that your group sees that you have not arrived at perfection either, and that you, too, need to continue to grow spiritually. This also means that when you hear the stories of others, you do not judge or criticize. Thank each person who shares a story.
The time to provide answers, spiritual guidance, and the message of Jesus will come. But this meeting is not it. This meeting is a time to get to know each other and to see where everyone is spiritually.
Introduction: Allow everyone time for a short introduction. This is especially important if everyone in the group does not already know each other. This should not take more than a few minutes.
Film: The Josh Hamilton or Michelle Aguilar films are suggested for this meeting.
Your Story: This is your groupâs chance to tell their I am Second stories. The depth and openness of these stories will vary from group to group. However, openness encourages more openness, so donât be afraid to be the first person to open up to the group.
Be sensitive to allow each person to share what he or she feels comfortable sharing. Some will need more time before they can share deeper issues. Others may need to be cut short to allow everyone time to talk about their stories. Use your discretion as you guide the group through this time.
The questions under âYour Storyâ are meant as guideposts, not mandatory questions. Encourage people to answer the questions they are willing to answer in the process of telling their stories.
Next Session: The next session will discuss the Brian âHeadâ Welch story and will address the issue of struggles. Encourage your group to read the Brian Welch chapter in the I Am Second book before your next meeting.
